A tweet promising an exclusive set of commemorative non-fungible tokens (NFTs) emerged, catching the attention of many of Buterin's 4.9 million followers. This malicious link, rather than fulfilling its promise, served as a conduit for the hacker to access and drain funds from those who interacted with it.

Crypto Twitter is known for its vigilance and quick reactions. Moments after the deceptive link surfaced, alarms were raised by many users. However, concrete confirmation of the hack seemed to have come from an unlikely source: Vitalik's father, Dmitriy "Dima" Buterin. While the deceptive tweet was promptly removed, the aftermath was unsettling, with numerous individuals reporting missing funds from their wallets.

Initial estimates suggested losses of about $147,000 in the hour post the hack. However, as investigations delved deeper, blockchain investigator @ZachXBT pinpointed the stolen amount to be a staggering $691,000. Interestingly, Buterin, known for his frequent and insightful interactions on Twitter, has maintained silence since the hack. His last activity was a retweet dating back to September 6. In a perplexing turn of events, @ZachZPT highlighted that the hacker seemed to mockingly send a stolen NFT back to Buterin's wallet, adding insult to injury.
