The cooling demand is coming on the heels of a summer season that saw record numbers of travelers, even as airlines were forced to cut flights in the lucrative New York market. It was a critical test as carriers and the Federal Aviation Administration faced scrutiny over whether they could make good on promises to avoid chaos that had marred other pandemic-era summers under the strain of passenger demand.
The Transportation Security Administration said this past summer was its busiest on record. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the agency screened more than 264 million people, compared with 262 million during the same period in 2019. Last year, TSA screened 238 million people during that time. International travel continues to be a bright spot for the industry, with Customs and Border Protection reporting an 18 percent jump in travelers arriving by air in July compared with a year earlier.
