Engine fire caused by mechanical fault

An engine mechanical failure may have been behind the fire that forced an Air China flight from Chengdu, in Sichuan province, to make an emergency landing in Singapore.

This is according to the airline's initial assessment of Sunday's incident, China's flag carrier said in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo at about 1am yesterday. Further investigations are under way.

Air China said the nine crew members on board flight CA403 handled the incident properly and according to procedure.

The pilots of the flight, which left Chengdu's Tianfu International Airport at 11.05am local time on Sunday, declared an emergency and requested priority landing at Changi Airport at 3.59pm local time after reporting smoke in the plane's forward cargo hold and lavatory.

After the plane landed on Changi Airport's Runway 3 at 4.15pm, the aircraft's emergency slides were deployed for passengers to evacuate.

Air China said the 146 passengers on board were cooperative, which allowed for a successful evacuation.

The Airport Emergency Service responded immediately to the incident and put out a fire in the left engine at around 4.25pm.

Air China said in its Weibo post: "With the assistance of Changi Airport, work to re-accommodate the passengers has been completed. We sincerely apologise to the affected passengers."

The emergency landing led to one of the runways at Changi Airport being closed for almost three hours. This delayed flights leaving and arriving at the airport. One aircraft was diverted to Batam, Indonesia, during the runway's closure, but the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and Changi Airport Group did not say how many other flights were affected by the incident.

Nine passengers on the Air China flight sustained minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and abrasions during evacuation.

Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau is investigating the incident and has contacted its Chinese counterpart, which will help with the probe, CAAS added.

The Air China flight was operated with an Airbus A320neo aircraft that is more than four years old and registered as B-305J.

The plane was powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, which have been plagued by reliability problems that have forced airlines to ground aircraft in the past. -- The Straits Times/ANN

British victory in Falklands War might spur Argentina to build nukes CIA feared

Agency worried that Argentina's political isolation following defeat could play a role in a decision to advance its nuclear program The CIA feared that British victory in the 1982 Falklands conflict would encourage Argentina's ruling military junta to step up its efforts to construct nuclear weapons, according to a newly uncovered report. Intelligence analysts at the spy agency examining the issue of nuclear proliferation wrote in a secret report that "the Falkland Islands crisis is raising security issues for Buenos Aires that could influence Argentine attitudes towards the development of nuclear technology." The report, dated 24 April 1982, said: "A humiliation in the Falklands probably would encourage the conclusion that the possession of nuclear weapons - or merely the foreign belief that Argentina had such weapons - might have made the UK more accommodating. A major reverse for Argentina in the dispute could persuade it to proceed to build nuclear weapons....

Osho on Spontaneity

Osho on Spontaneity – Divine purity reduced to practical life means spontaneity Osho – Divine purity reduced to practical life means spontaneity. The spontaneous person is innocent. He has a quality that only children have, and that is the meaning of purity, innocence. He has the quality that animals have and the trees have and which man has lost. To be spontaneous means not to act out of the past, because out of the past is all cunningness, cleverness, calculation, arithmetic. When you act in the moment and it has no reference to your past, the action has a beauty, a purity – the same as a small child’s act. Whether he laughs or cries or goes into a tantrum or becomes angry, all his acts have purity – it is uncalculated. His anger is hot and not cold. The calculated anger is cold. His anger is natural, a responsiveness. He has not brooded over it, he has not planned it. He is just in the hands of nature – hence the beauty. He is surrendered to his nature; he is not trying to cont...
